We broke a GH Craft carbon wheel while testing in August. Anxious to see how it was constructed, we sawed it in half, through the broken part. note the hollow outboard rim.

traditonally, its not easy to attach a 6'x16' body to a frame that is not much bigger than a 6' tall person, and have it hold up at highway speeds. outlined below is how the MIT Solar Electric Vehicle Team attaches the aerobody/array to the chassis.

top view of Tesseract, one you dont see too often. this was the same time as the sunset pic, just after the whole array was on teh car. its actually missing 6 cells. can you guess where they go?

machining our tabbing fixture for our 2003 array. our array was done at SunCat Solar by Alain Chuzel. CNC machining is cheaper if students do it at student shops, so we made the fixture for Alain.

This pic was the first time Tesseract had the whole array on it, and the fairings were painted. We decided to roll it out and take some good pictures for our website. We really lucked out and got this great sunset shot.

the car looks almost surreal in this pic. we didnt really have much trouble with trees shadowing our evening and morning charges this day.

we retrofitted our gap changer with a hex shaft, but had no way of holding it in place. this slowed us down over the course of the race day, but we didnt notice until day 2 because the afternoon of day 1 was cloudy. this is me hacking up a wrench, which is glued to a socket with 5 minute epoxy. we zip-tied this on our gap changer in Alice Springs, and it kept us going 105 kph on day 3.

the adjustable gap mechanism can be seen here. since the bearings slide on teh spindle, they produce gouges, making it vvery diffficult to reassemble.
