Description
Blessed with a new car design, new spirit and new determination, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Solar Phantom Race Team once again proved itself worthy of the test in Sunrayce 95, a nine-day, 1,100-mile race from Indianapolis to Golden, Colo. -- with the first overnight stop on the Rose-Hulman campus. The Engineers finished 14th out of 38 teams. For the second straight Sunrayce, the team didn't experience a major mechanical or electrical breakdown! Highlights of the race came on Day 2 when a large and enthusiastic hometown crowd gave the team a send off that team members will never forget. Also, on Day 3, Rose-Hulman had its best-ever daily performance in Sunrayce competition with a 10th place finish on the route from Alton, Ill., to Fulton, Mo. That put the team in 11th place in the overall standings after Day 3. However, as in Sunrayce 93, the lack of sunshine severely hampered the team's performance. The Solar Phantom finished 21st on Day 5 and found themselves in 17th place. The team was consistent throughout the rest of the race, placing 17th on both Day 6 and Day 7, 15th on Day 8 and 18th on Day 9. That consistency helped the team keep its record of improved finishing in Sunrayce events -- 20th in 1990 and 15th in 1993. Greg Haines was team leader of the 1995 team, with Chip Montgomery serving as chief operations officer. Jonathan Rich was the chief mechanical engineering, while Carl Brown was the chief electrical engineer. Drivers were Jay Baumgartner, Dennis Brylow, Brad Harris and Chris Meyer.
