In anticipation of Sunrayce 99, I compiled my experience in previous Sunrayces ('93, '95, '97) into this document. It focuses on race techniques which have worked over the years for Stanford. For a formatted version, try: http://www.homestead.com/dorian/files/Manifesto.PDF

This is an interesting shot of Maize & Blue captured from a documentary video. It shows the car getting an evening charge. Note the car is protected from any debris and heat with custom sewn covers and also not the stantions used to keep crowds away from the car.

Protecting Maize & Blue Before Sunrayce

This is an interesting photo of Maize & Blue during Scruitineering prior to Sunrayce 93. One of the things we had to adapt to was the constant attention to the car from other teams, race officials, the press and the general public. Whenever we moved the car, we were always on the lookout for accidents waiting to happen. I likened it to how the Secret Service protects the President...the car is important, so take care it doesn't get damaged!

This paper recounts Michigan's use of weather forecasting as a competitive weapon in Sunrayce '93. Jeff was one of 3 weather forecasters on the team and their collective ability to forecast weather was instrumental in Michigan's victory. An excellent read!

Here is the chase van we used in Sunrayce 93. Note the trailer behind the vehicle. We used this trailer to carry a gas generator that powered the strategy computer (IBM RS/6000 UNIX workstation).

The Chevy van we used for Lead. We had a "dispute" with the race officials and were forced to use this van (we had Ford vans we were planning to use). Long story. Note the lights and "bull horn" on the vehicle. Surprisingly, we used the bull horn a lot and it was always nice to roll into town blaring "hail to the victors!"

Yet another shot of the chase van. One funny thing that we "forgot" was to put our vehicle number on our support vehicles. As a result, we put on some black electrical tape on the back of chase.

Laser 5th Wheel

This is a bad quality screen capture, but I just had to show this. This is a non-contact, laser 5th wheel that we used to find our position along the race route. We had digitized the elevation along the route (using a barometric altimeter) and this 5th wheel. We then used it during the race to locate ourselves. Of course, now you can buy a GPS locator for a few hundred dollars, but that's a luxary we didn't have!
