| Original Al Chassis, Photon Torpedo Photo by Sean Willis created 2/9/1997 submitted 9/9/2003 08:39:14 PM Original Aluminium frame for the 1997 UIUC Photon Torpedo. Frame weighed on the order of 30 lb, but later suffered structural failure while towing back from testing. Mismatched wall thickness on the connection point of the rear suspension subframe did not allow for full weld penetration, and significant loading in the trailer led to catastrophic failure. Later added 80lb of steel reinforcements to ensure safety for the race. | |
