1/8 scale model of a shape similar to the Third Degree Burner in crosswind configuration. Tufts near the bubble show turbulent/separated flow, although complete separation would have the tufts flipped over each other. Tufts near the edge also show that in crosswinds the shape has uneven downward lift.

In order to verify the computer models, we did full scale wind tunnel testing of Maize & Blue at Lockheed's facility in Georgia. The primary useful feedback from the testing was in regard to the design and usefulness of the wheel opening covers which were subsequently redesigned. Of course, it was also useful to have actual drag data for use in our race strategy similator.

Early Quarter Scale Model of Maize & Blue

This is an early quarter scale wind tunnel model of Maize & Blue. There were at least 4 preliminary designs that were tested in Michigan's 5' x 7' wind tunnel including this one. Note that the design is testing a 3-wheeled configuration with one wheel in front. Separately we built a full-scale test buck to evaluate the handling and performance of this configuration and based upon those tests, the design was ultimately abandoned in favor of a 4-wheeled design.
You can see the final design of M&B in this model, however, because the final design had four wheels with the front two wheels in the side pods which created the challenge of having the front wheels nearly behind the driver (a handling challenge of its own!).
