Photo of UIUC Photon Torpedo Static Charger, taken on first day of Sunrayce '97 at Rose-Hulman. The charger was built with an automated sun tracking system, which used a series of photodiodes placed at the base on both sides of a tall "shade wall". When the wall was normal to the sun, so shade was cast on the diodes and their differential output was zero. When the wall was offset, one side receifed relatively more light, and the voltage difference drove a control circuit to actuate the stand. Heave, finicky, and cumbersome to operate, but it did work after a fashion.

Drag and "streamline" data acquisition at Amoco Research Center wind tunnel, May 1998. Vehicle is Photon Torpedo, UIUC's entry into Sunrayce '97. Attempting to locate areas of flow separation, and develop methods to reduce drag on future design derivatives. Note linear bearings under all three wheels, and load cell under rear wheel.
